The MCR have taken over the JCR bar!
Come along on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for great deals on a wide range of drinks. The bar is open 8.30 - 11pm.

Miniball 2010
The annual black tie Downing MCR Summer Mini-ball will be held this year on:
SATURDAY 28th AUGUST 2010, 4.30pm 'til late
This is one of the highlights of the MCR\'s calendar and this year will be no exception! Check out the photos from last year's extremely successful event!
The afternoon/evening will include:
> Human table-football (very popular last year!)
> A giant, inflatable 9-hole crazy golf course
> Free cocktails and ice-cream
> Garden games (Giant Jenga, Petanque, Skittles, Frisbee, Croquet etc etc)
> This will all be followed by a Jazz trio playing at a drinks reception which will be held before a fabulous 4-course meal
> After the 4-course meal, spend the rest of the evening dancing away with the Ceilidh, or taking your chances with our
casino games while enjoying some continuing jazz music and our free all-inclusive bar which will be serving a range of beers, spirits and soft drinks

May Week Garden Party
To say farewell to our MPhil & graduating students who will shortly be leaving us, your MCR will be holding a garden party in the marquee that will be on the paddock on Monday 14th June. There will be a FREE BBQ, cash bar (with FREE soft drinks), music, plenty of games (garden Jenga, Boules/Croquet etc) and will be a fantastic time to chill out and enjoy the long summer evening in our beautiful college! This event will be FREE to leaving students. A group of us will then probably saunter down to Scudamore's afterwards to hire a night punt to watch the Trinity fireworks on the Cam that will be happening later that night.... This is an evening NOT to be missed!

Time: 6pm-8pm
Price: FREE for finishing/recently finished MCR members; £4 for any other MCR members; £6 for any outside guests (which are very welcome to attend!)

Rooms available in Friendly Graduate House
I'm Emma, a 5th year medical student at Downing. My friend Lucy (a Downing PhD student) and I are looking for two new housemates for next year, and have a room available for 9 weeks this summer too.
*Two rooms available 10th Sept 2010 - 9th Sept 2011. The smaller room is £329 per month and the larger £364 per month (bills not included). You may be able to move in earlier if this is prefered.
*One room is available for 9 weeks this summer: Saturday 12th June - Saturday 14th August. £79 per week (bills not included).
Our house is on Cromwell Road. 10 minutes cycle from town and the downing site, 20 minutes cycle from Addenbrookes and 5 minutes from the station.
We have a good sized kitchen and sitting room. A conservatory and shed in a nice big garden with BBQ. We have a dishwasher, washing machine and tumble drier, big fridge and freezer, TV with Freeview and broadband internet.

Formal Swap with Clare Hall
Formal Swap with Clare Hall on Wednesday, March 17th--an Irish-flavoured
dinner on St. Patrick's day.
Clare Hall is very reputable for their formals, three-course meal including
wine, with cheese and biscuits plus coffee and fruit after is covered by
£18.00 per person. They usually do a sherry reception at 7:30pm, dinner
starts at 8:00pm. Friends from Clare Hall will then bring us to their Bar for drinks.

Burns Night
Burns Night is a celebration of the Scottish poet Robbie Burns, involving traditional food, drink and dancing. This year's event will start with a drinks reception in the Howard Building, followed by a four course dinner in the Hall. After dinner we will have a ceilidh in the Howard Building and a cash bar. The price for all of this (food, wine, whisky, port and dancing) is just £17 for Downing members and £21 for guests! To book tickets please go to:

We also have some free tickets to give away. During the dinner we need three people to stand up and give speeches. They are "the ode to the haggis" a traditional Scottish poem celebrating the haggis we're about to eat, "the ode to the laddies", a humorous toast to the men in the room, and "the ode to the lassies", the same to the ladies. If you would be interested please email mcr-social-secretary[at]dow.cam.ac.uk and in return you will receive a free ticket to the event!
Due to the popularity of this event, we have initially limited tickets to one guest per Downing member. If you would like more, please get in touch with our social secretaries. This is one of the most popular events on the MCR calendar, so book your tickets now!

MCR ELECTRION AND CHRISTMAS MEAL: Thursday 3rd December
Booking for your Christmas meal is now open! Please visit the Porters' Lodge and book yourself in for your Christmas meal via the normal formal booking system (the cost of the dinner is £12.75 and includes a four course meal, port, drinks reception and shannanigans in the MCR afterwards!). Places are disappearing FAST!!
Our elections will be held during the drinks reception before the dinner - to which EVERYONE is welcome, whether attending the dinner or not. Full MCR members (excluding affiliates) have the right to vote for next years committee members via a single non-transferable secret ballot for your MCR committee 2010 - so make sure you come along!
Results will be announced after the dinner.
Dress code is black tie, but NO GOWNS are required.

Firework after Formal this FRIDAY!
Just a reminder that there will be a fireworks display, free of charge, after Formal Hall this FRIDAY 6 November - if you haven't booked your tickets yet, hurry up to the Porters' Lodge as they will surely sell out fast!
Even if you aren't coming to dine, it would be great to see you there - the fireworks display is usually very good!! Just gather around the paddock from around 9.15pm!

Downing Enterprise 2010 Competition
Do you want the chance to win up to £25,000 to fund a business idea? Do you have a great invention and need some help to get it off the ground? Would you like support and advice from experienced Downing College alumni?
Then you need to apply to the Downing Enterprise Competition!
Have a look at the Rules and Procedures at http://www.downingcambridge.com/development/projects/downing-enterprise and describe your idea on no more than four pages of A4. Send this with your entry form to the Downing Director of Development by 5.30pm, Friday, 18th December 2009.
If the Downing Enterprise Board likes your idea they will offer you £500 to spend on developing a Business Plan and allocate a Mentor to help you. You will then be invited to London in May 2010 to make a pitch (like Dragon's Den but friendlier!) and a golden opportunity to win up to £25,000 as either a grant or a loan to fund your business.

SCR/MCR Seminar Night: Call for Speakers
The next SCR/MCR seminar night is:

This is when grad students give a talk to an audience of other grad students and Fellows.
We currently need 3 students that would be willing to give a ~15 minute talk on their research that is aimed at intelligent non-specialists. This is a great chance to hone those communication skills, benefit from a 'fresh pair of eyes', and is usually thoroughly enjoyable.
We also require to know the number of students that wish to attend as audience, as free food and drink is provided after the seminar.

Housemate Needed by Downing Members!
3 Graduate students are looking for a housemate to join their friendly household at 15 Cromwell road Cambridge (CB13EB); 10 minutes cycle from town or Addenbrokes hospital. The room is ground-floor, relatively large with single bed, large desk and wardrobe. We have a nice kitchen with a large fridge, washing machine gas cooker and plenty of cupboard space, a good-sized sitting room with a comfortable leather sofa, freeview tv and small dining table, a small conservatory which contains the freezer and another leather sofa, a shed which houses the tumble drier and has room for bikes as well as upstairs and downstairs bathrooms. We are looking for someone, preferably another graduate student (although we’d consider graduates generally) from the period September ‘09 –September ‘10. The rent is £335 per month. "If you play a Uni sport, you could be eligible for Griffins Membership as one of the Sporting elite of Downing College. Please contact the Griffins Junior President, Clare Palmer (cap55), to say what Uni sport you take part in and whether you have received University Colours, a Half Blue or a Full Blue in that sport.
