THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
by Stef Porter
A hilarious new musical comedy
Lent Term, Week 6: Tuesday 23rd - Saturday 27th February
Auditions:
ADC Bar: Monday 30th November, 1500-1800
ADC, Larkum Studio: Tuesday 1st December, 1400-1800
We are looking for singers, actors and dancers for all sorts of roles. If you are auditioning for a singing role, please bring something to sing.
Accompaniment can be provided on request in the audition.
"She'll even buy a ticket and pack her things to leave.
Though we all know the story we pretend that we believe."
Rachel dreams of fame and recognition. Zander dreams of wealth and women. Bonnie dreams of having a dream. To what lengths would you go to be successful? 'The Final Countdown' is a thoroughly modern musical following
someone like you or me, like the person downstairs or like the person in Starbucks. Ambition is at the very root of our next day's planning, yet Rachel, Zander and Bonnie do not know what their hopes and dreams will lead.
This piece of punchy and hilarious new writing - at times fantastical, at times close to the bone - tracks three students in their final year at university as they plan, prioritise and panic. Is Zander's CV his saving grace? Is Rachel cut out to appear on television every day? Are Bonnie's trivial goals her downfall? Don't laugh too hard, just in case you're laughing at yourself!
Please contact shp28 if you can't make the audition slots or have any questions.

The Wolfson Howler is back in action, for what promises to be a sparkling night of comedy.
Check the e-flyer to get in the mood:
http://bit.ly/howler-flyer
Ray Peacock, one of the nittiest-grittiest funny men in the business, is headlining this edition of Cambridge's best stand up night. Hecklers beware.
Compere Ed Gamble will be on hand to steer things on a straight course. The best local comics from the Cambridge scene will be down in support.
All in the cosy setting of one of Cambridge's friendliest (and very cheapest) bars.
Things kick off at eight. We recommend prompt arrival if you want a seat.
For those who haven't been before, check the reviews of the last Howler in the Tab and in Varsity:

http://www.varsity.co.uk/reviews/1536
Support the Howler on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wolfson-Howler/22881594132
and on myspace.com/wolfsonhowler
This is the last Howler this term and is sure to be a big one. Ray Peacock is going to strut about displaying a rather splendid comedic plumage. The cost as always is free to Wolfson members, and a fiver to guests (seeing a lot of the Howler headliners down at the Junction costs three times this!)
Finally, here's where to find us, if you need:
http://bit.ly/6GmueC
Very much hope to see you at what promises to be a riotous, ribald, even unrivalled night of comedy!
Cheers from the Howler Team

THE TRIPLE HELIX CAMBRIDGE www.camtriplehelix.com PRESENTS:
"ARE WE ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE?"
23rd Nov (Mon), 7.30pm
McCrum Lecture Theatre, Bene't Street, behind The Eagle pub
FREE ENTRY
Do aliens really exist? What might they look like? And how might we react if we found them?
Human beings have long speculated on the existence of life elsewhere in the universe, but only now are we tackling the question with science. Astronomers are using increasingly sophisticated techniques to find and analyse exoplanets. Meanwhile, biologists are searching for life in our solar system. Science fiction has imagined a wide variety of alien life. We'll be asking if the aliens of literature, art and film have a basis in science and, if not, we'll find out what biologists really think aliens look like.
Join us for a lively and informative evening of scientific speculation in search of the answers to all of these questions and more. Refreshments will be available after the talk and Q&A session.
Panel:
Dr Jack Cohen (co-author of The Science of Discworld and Evolving the Alien)
Dr Lewis Dartnell (Centre for Planetary Sciences, UCL)
Dr Carolin Crawford (Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge)
Prof Mark Brake (University of Glamorgan)
Chairwoman:

P&G's Biggest Acquisition in its History -$54bn purchase of Gillette
Want to know more about this biggest ever acquisition of P&G?
In January 2005 P&G announced the biggest acquisition in its history (and the largest in the industry) - the $54bn purchase of Gillette. This case study covers the reasoning behind this acquisition as presented to Wall Street at the time: strategic rationale, the impact on shareholder value, the financing of the deal, integration plan, and most importantly - how this all went through.
Why should you come to this case study presentation?
This case study should give you a good understanding of how big acquisition projects are carried out and what it takes to "sell" them to the stock market. The presentation will include slides that were used to persuade the Wall Street that the deal will be successful. It puts the right emphasis on the external factors affecting the companies' decision making, and demonstrates how Economics concepts are applied to business finance. Additionally you will develop an understanding of the roles of finance in a leading global businesses.
Date: 19 November, 2009
Time: 6:30pm
Venue: Mong Hall, Sidney Sussex
Please sing up on the website

Take the Leap aims to give school children skills that will help them inform their lives. The workshop works with community schools where few students attend higher education. This is not a big commitment, and will only take up a day or two of your time. It is a great way to give something to your local community whilst at Cambridge. Not only that, but being involved in a project like this will appeal to employers, particularly the training workshop we provide. This is an excellent experience to work with children, especially for those aiming to follow a career in teaching.
If you want to get involved, or for more information, contact Rav (rsa31@cam.ac.uk).

Saturday 31st October in the Bateman Auditorium, Gonville & Caius College
Night of the Living Dead - 8PM - £3 entry
Faced with legions of corpses reanimated by the radiation from a fallen satellite, seven people barricade themselves inside a farmhouse. As the night progresses, tempers flare over the best way to last the night and the biggest threat to their survival proves not to be the horde outside.
Legendary, seminal horror from the father of the modern zombie, George A. Romero.
Once More, with Feeling - 10PM - free entry
Sunnydale is alive with the sound of music as the townsfolk reveal their most intimate secrets in elaborate musical numbers, while Buffy faces an existential crisis brought on by her recent resurrection. When the sinister nature of the performances becomes clear, the Slayer must confront both a monster-of-the-week and her return from the afterlife.
Come and sing along to the Joss Whedon (Toy Story, Serenity) penned episode that Channel 4 viewers voted the 13th greatest musical of all time.
Two spooky screenings with freaky fun and games in between. Come dressed up!

FREE ENTRY

Technology has been touted as the panacea for the challenges facing developing countries. However, with limited resources, there is a need to prioritise and economise. Should we focus technological R&D on affordable basic infrastructure, or would it be more expedient to haul communities out of poverty "on the end of an ethernet cable"? This interdisciplinary event will examine case studies of technological aid in the Third World, evaluate the socioeconomic impact of these and discuss future possibilities. Refreshments will be available after the talk and Q&A session.
Panel: Dr David Grimshaw (Head of International Programme - New Technologies, Practical Action), Professor Geoff Walsham (University of Cambridge, Judge Business School), Dr Allam Ahmed (University of Sussex) and Dr Shoba Arun (Manchester Metropolitan University).

SJC // JCR and CUSU Ethical Affairs present..
'The Yes Men', followed by a Video Link Q&A session between the two 'yes men' featured in the film and our audience!
When: 19:45 - 22:30, Saturday, 24 October 2009
Where: Palmerston Room, Fisher Building, St John's College How much: £2.50 (but well worth it!)
This highly amusing, yet shocking movie highlights some cases of controversial cooperate responsibility issues, and documents two mens' attempts to ‘fix’ them. But we felt sitting back and watching the film doesn't quite bring the Yes Men out of the big screen and into our lives enough...
So we've collaborated with producers of the film and arranged a special event: following the screening of the film, Andy and Mike (the 'yes men' themselves) will be answering our questions via a Skype Conference call! We hope this will engage and inspire our students - perhaps even inspire Andy and Mike - and at just £2.50, this surely is an event you wouldn't wanna say you missed!

THE ROARING '20s
Dance your way back to the Jazz Age at the famous Churchill MCR Guest Night coming this 5th December. Dive into a world of bobbed hair, flapper girls and the Charleston with our late night disco, or sing the night away Cabaret style at the karaoke.
But beware; college alcohol restrictions have spawned a criminal underworld of illegal alcohol and gambling. Mingle with the mobsters in the Speakeasy where you will find an abundance of bootlegged booze, or try your hand in Capone's Casino, but be careful not to lose, the stakes are high...
Tickets are £15 pounds each, and include dinner (at 19.30), pre-dinner cocktails and all entertainment. Cheap drinks will be available all night from the MCR bar. Wine for the dinner can be also purchased beforehand from the MCR bar.

Sustainable built environments: Building design, building performance and building occupants.
This seminar brings together current graduate researchers from the Department of architecture to question the influence of building design and occupants on achieving sustainable built environments. While the speakers’ research contexts and building typologies vary, the work is unified by an interrogation of the role of the occupant in the sustainability agenda and the occupants’ subjective assessment of their built environments. Across all building typologies, built environments can be designed to so-called sustainable standards, however the people who eventually occupy such environments have a significant influence on their performance. Drawing from the diverse research approaches, the seminar questions the narrow technological focus that has dominated the debate of what is ‘sustainable architecture’ in an effort to highlight the complexity of the sustainability agenda, the possibility of ‘sustainable architectures’, and reclaim some ground where sustainability is viewed holistically within specific socio-cultural contexts.

If you'd like to know more about what we do, take a look at our website at www.srcf.ucam.org/curnu, and we'd like to invite you to join us for a drink at our event on Tues 27th Oct at 7:30pm at the CURNU building, 2 Chaucer Rd, CB3 2EB. Please get in touch with me on curnu@cusu.cam.ac.uk if you have any questions.

Calling All Scientists
Hello from the Danby Society, Downing College's science society. We are here for you and we run a wide range of talks and social events throughout the year. All students who are studying subjects in the areas of Natural Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science are ellgible for membership. As a member you will be informed about all our events and any events that aren't free will be heavily subsidised. In return all members pay a single levy of £12 at the start of the year (which you easily make back just by coming to our garden party at the end of the year). If you would like to become a member, simply email me (orad2@cam.ac.uk). Our first event will be a talk by Dr Jim Secord of the HPS faculty on 'Global Darwin', next Thursday (22nd) at 6:40 in the Music Room (E staircase). There will be drinks available for 20 mins prior to the talk, and afterwards. Non-members welcome.

The Open Knowledge Foundation (http://www.okfn.org/) is a not-for-profit organization that promotes knowledge that can be freely used, reused and redistributed, be it Shakespeare's sonnets, chemical crystal structures or Bulgarian budget data. We run many working groups and projects which rely on volunteers with a wide range of skills and varying levels of available time, so there is sure to be something of interest! Current projects requiring volunteers include:
* Open Shakespeare (http://www.openshakespeare.org/): Shakespeare's works free on the web, with no restrictions or conditions on their use. We need volunteers to proof edit and format texts, or even to create an original book cover design for downloadable versions of the plays.
If Shakespeare's not to your taste we have several other projects we're actively seeking volunteer assistance with including:
* Open Text Book (http://www.opentextbook.org/): one of the primary online listings and repositories of open (free to access and use) textbooks. We need the assistance of a part-time editor to curate andextend our current listing and blog about new finds.
* Open Economics "Where Does My Money Go" (http://www.openeconomics.net/wdmmg/): developer and researcher needed to develop prize-winning "Where Does My Money Go" project proposal which aims to track and chart UK government expenditure.
For more information please contact our Community Coordinator Jonathan Gray on info@okfn.org.

Help open up scientific data!
Dates: From 1st July (flexible)
Duration: 10 weeks
The Unilever Centre for Molecular Science Informatics are looking for two summer students to help develop a set of web services that will allow researchers and the wider community to easily find and create data sets with open licenses, thus enabling future reuse. This project will extend the capabilities of the open data registry CKAN (http://www.ckan.net/), which links to open data packages ranging from crystallographic structures to Shakespeare's works. It will involve working closely with software developers to test the applications, finding and opening data sets to add content to the system and directing the project priorities. No coding skills are necessary.
An application for project funding is currently pending, which if successful will provide payment of £200 per week. If not, the project will still proceed and other support may be obtainable, so all expressions of interest are encouraged. Please contact Jenny Molloy (jcm80) on behalf of the team led by Prof Peter Murray-Rust and Dr Rufus Pollock for more details and to register your interest.
